In Hindu mythology, Sanjeevani is described a magical herb which has the power to cure any malady. It was believed that medicines prepared from this herb could revive a dead person. This herb is mentioned in the Ramayana when, Ravana's son Indrajit hurls a powerful weapon at Lakshmana. Lakshmana is badly wounded and is nearly killed by Indrajeet. Hanuman was called upon to fetch this herb from the mount Dunagiri (Mahodaya) in the Himalayas or Valley of Flowers. Upon reaching Mount Sumeru, Hanuman was unable to identify the herb and decided to lift the entire mountain and bring it to the battlefield. Today there is still the mystery and the search for Sanjeevani, the plant that gives back life again. In the end, it is a search for the knowledge about timeless life in you, a search for immortality.

In the fierce battle that happened between Ravana’s son Meghnad and Ram’s brother Lakshmana, a deadly arrow could have changed the course of the war. Lakshmana lost consciousness and Rama wailed in despair. In that desperate hour, Hanuman approached the Lankan Royal Physician Sushena for guidance. Sushena asked Hanuman to rush to Dronagiri Hills and fetch four divine herbs - Mrutha Sanjeevani (For life), Vishalyakarani (For arrows), Sandhanakarani (For skin) and Savarnyakarani (For skin colour).

When Hanuman saluted in his feet, Lankan Royal Physician Sushena mentioned, “On the Himalayas, between Kailas and rishabh mountain there lies a mountain of life giving herbs. The herbs are of four categories: mritsanjivani, vishalyakarni, suvarnkarni, and sandhani. They always emit light. You have to come with those herbs at the earliest.

Various studies conducted on this plant revealed a special feature of resistance to drought in this plant. This feature makes Sanjeevani Booti capable of standing drought conditions for long years. Agricultural scientists are planning to insert this gene from the plant to various other crops. As a result, the crops would become resistant to drought conditions. Such transgenic plants would help in preventing loss of crops even when sufficient water is not present.
