Ganesh Chaturthi Patri or Patra Puja, 21 leaves to worship Ganesh on Ganesh Chavithi...

Ganesh Patra Puja is very important step in Ganesh Chaturthi puja. 21 types of leaves are used for Ganesh Chaturthi festival to worship Lord Ganesha. This pathra puja is also called as ‘Eka Vimshathi Patra Puja. Chanting each name of the Lord, Ganesha is worshipped with each type of leaf. As per Hinduism, Rushis used leaves, barks and other tree parts as the Pooja material for Pujas.

21 Types of Leaves for Ganesh Ekavimsathi Puja – Common names and botanical names of the leaves:

01. Machi Patra – Artemisia vulgaris
02. Bruhathi Patra – Solanum indicum
03. Bilva Patra – Aegle marmeolus
04. Durva Patra – Cyanodon dactylon
05. Kanaka Patra – Datura metal
06. Badari Patra – Zizipus jujube
07. Apamarga Patra – Achyranthus aspera
08. Tulasi Patra – Ocimum sanctum
09. Chootha Patra – Mangifera indica
10. Karaveera Patra – Nerium indicum
11. Vishnu krantha Patra – Convolvulus pluricaucis
12. Daadimi Patra – Punica granatum
13. Devdar Patra – Cedrus deodar
14. Maruvaka Patra – Origanum majoram
15. Sindhuvara Patra – Vitex nirgundo
16. Sandhya pushpin Patra – Jasminum grandiflorum
17. Gandali Patra – Latha Durva
18. Shami Patra – Prosopis specigera
19. Ashwatha Patra – Ficus religiosa
20. Arjuna Patra – Terminelia Arjuna

In Bhavishya Purana, four more leaves are mentioned for Patra puja:

01. Brungaraja Patra – Eclipta alba
02. Mala Patra
03. Ketaki Patra – Pandanus Odoratissimus
04. Agasthya Patra – Sesbania grandifolia

In Hinduism, flowers and leaves are given utmost importance while worshipping Hindu Gods and Goddesses. All Gods and Goddesses have their own favorite list of flowers and leaves.

While worshipping Gods and Goddesses, devotees choose only those flowers and leaves which are favorite of the deity. Some flowers and leaves are prohibited for some of the deities and should not be offered to them.

21 different types of leaves are suggested for Ganesha Chaturthi Puja and popularly known as Patris Puja or Patra Puja. As it is not practical to have all of them during the Puja time, devotees can include some of them in Puja Samagari.

Due to one legend in Ganesha Purana which talks about Tulasi and Lord Ganesha cursing each other, Tulasi leaves are not offered to Lord Ganesha. However as an exception Tulasi leaves are offered to Lord Ganesha during Ganesha Chaturthi Puja which is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi Puja.
