Secrets Behind Romantic Well Built By Kakatiyas - కాకతీయుల శృంగార బావి రహస్యం ఎప్పటికి విడేను? - With Subtitles/CC

Stepwell tinged with history

The ancient well known as Anthasthula Bavi, in Shivanagar is said to have been built during the Kakatiya era. The well is also known as Metla Bavi. Apparently, the ancient well was a swimming pool for Kakatiya queen Rudrama Devi who used to take a secret underground tunnel from Warangal fort to use it. This was due to her posing as a prince for some years.

Architectural marvel

The stairs take one inside revealing the marvel it must have been. The walls and the ceilings must have had beautiful carvings at one point of time. It was amazing to see the well full of water even in the driest season. A true architectural genius! The local residents say they are hard pressed to find water in the area even if they drill 300 feet deep, but the well remains full.

There is no semblance of any security here, no guard, nothing, and hence no one to take care of this priceless heritage. It gives the appearance of a place to hang out and drink for the local people. The empty liquor bottles around the place reflect this.

Fortunately, we came to know that after decades of being neglected, the district administration has finally decided to revive the step-well to its full glory. Funds have been allocated and the restoration will begin soon.

How to reach the place:

It’s quite near so it’s best to drive there in a day’s trip. Warangal is well connected by road and rail. We started by car at 5 am and were back to Hyderabad by 4 pm.

Nearby places:

Warangal Fort and the Thousand Pillar Temple
